Focus on Research

“We have been given a wonderful heritage of courage and wisdom and as we continue to extend our hand to the benefit of mankind may we continue to believe and search for further knowledge” Stattel, 1956. p.194

Sensory integration has been the subject of more research than any other approach within the field of occupational therapy (Parham & Mailloux, 2001). For many years, it has been one of the most frequently applied frames of reference used by paediatric occupational therapists (Mulligan, 2002).

This section aims at promoting public awareness of the research conducted in the field of sensory integration. The main objective is to familiarise visitors with published scientific research and trigger further reflection among parents, educators, students, researchers, and other professionals. Theory grows on the work of others and in order for sensory integration theory to be advanced, research in neurosciences and behaviour has been interwoven in a manner that could lead to further conceptualisations. It is hoped that practitioners and theorists will embark on a reflective process that will aid the formulation of new hypotheses and constructs. If further research is stimulated, then the scope of the theory will have been achieved.

“Truth, like infinity, is to be forever approached but never reached” Ayres, 1972. p.7
