Autism, Spectrum Disorders - Sensory Integration and Behavior - Problem Identification and Intervention
With Carolyn Murray-Slutsky, OTR and Betty Paris, PT. Ms. Paris and Ms. Murray-Slutsky together have formed STAR Services, a company dedicated to providing high quality educational and consultative services. They lecture and present workshops throughout the United States and Europe. They authored the book “Exploring the Spectrum of Autism and PDD- Intervention Strategies”. Their latest book “Is it Sensory or is it Behavior- Intervention Strategies” was published in 2004. The speakers skillfully use a layering system to guide participants to a deep understanding of the complex inter relationship between sensory integrative, communication, and behavioral problems seen in individuals with autism spectrum disorder and pervasive developmental delays and sensory integrative disorders. Sensory modulation, tactile discrimination and motor planning will be discussed in-depth. Videos and case presentations will be used to drive home the inter-relationship and help participants prioritize the underlying and primary problem. Specific intervention strategies will clearly be identified for use in a variety of settings to improve the functional performance in the areas of sensory modulation, tactile discrimination, and motor planning. Through a variety of learning activities, participants will analyze why people behave the way they do, sort out sensory based problems from other causes, and design intervention strategies to address the underlying problems.
