| This two-day workshop is designed for professionals working in early intervention and mental health settings who are interested in enhancing their knowledge of and clinical skills in assessment and treatment of self-regulation, attention, multisensory, and interaction problems in children ages birth through school-age years. These professionals include occupational therapists and physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, paediatricians, nurses, and special educators. The strategies presented in the workshop reflect the synthesis of sensory integration, family-centered, and infant/young child mental health practices. Participants will learn clinical assessments including formal and informal observations of self-regulation and parent-child interactions. Treatment techniques will focus on therapy approaches to foster self-regulation, sensory processing, attention, and interaction skills within the context of the parent-child relationship. Research findings on various clinical approaches and their effectiveness will be presented as well.
Assessment and treatment approaches will address the problems of children with a range of developmental, emotional, and constitutional difficulties. A number of case studies of children with regulatory disorders and multisystem developmental disorders will be presented to illustrate the clinical decision-making process. A problem-based learning approach will be used to integrate and apply concepts and techniques to the participants’ settings and disciplines. Several participants will have the opportunity to present a case from their clinical or educational setting for consultation.
Workshop Objectives:
Participants will learn to:
1. Recognize the interplay of constitutional and emotional factors in children experiencing a range of developmental challenges.
2. Identify symptoms of self-regulatory, sensory processing, attentional, communication, and interactional problems in infants and children using a range of assessments.
3. Identify both the parent’s and child’s emotional needs using a developmental and clinical framework.
4. Assess parent-child interactions and emotional and self-regulatory needs using observational techniques.
5. Develop treatment strategies to address the constitutional and emotional needs of children who experience difficulties while incorporating techniques that meet the emotional needs of the family.
