Sensory Integration 1 - Theory and Intervention
The SI 1 Theory and Intervention Course is primarily for Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Speech and Language Therapists looking for post-graduate training in Sensory Integration theory and practice. Other graduates may be considered if working in relevant areas at the discretion of the executive committee. It is advisable to have relevant clinical experience and it is preferable to have attended an Introductory Study Day. The course is primarily lecture based with some videos and case presentations. Self-directed study will be required for completion of the assignment

The course overviews the theory of Sensory Integration, assessment from a Sensory Integration perspective and treatment principles using Sensory Integration techniques. Lectures cover the sensory systems looking at their structure, neurology and function. Praxis and sensory modulation are discussed from an SI theory basis

Videos are used to illustrate theory, assessment and treatment. Participants are encouraged to bring up case studies for discussion.

The learning outcomes for this course are for the student to be able to:

1. Critically examine the postulates of Sensory Integration as a theory, assessment and model of intervention,

2. Critically examine the structures and their function within the central nervous system that influence sensory processing

3. Analyse critically the cluster types of sensory processing disorders, associated features/ behaviours and appropriate strategies for intervention

4. Evaluate the evidence base for Sensory Integration.)
