Cost: £1000. This includes two blocks, [usually in July and January] 4 mentoring sessions between the two blocks and the fee for registration with Cardiff University. Credits: 20 Master’s level credits on successful completion of a case study presentation, and a 3500 word essay.
The aim of this module is for students to develop in-depth knowledge and experience in sensory integration and therapy in order to support critical analysis and evidence of interventions. Students will be expected to to evaluate the effectiveness of therapy through research, such as the use of single subject experimental design or qualitative measures. The use of reflection will be critically explored to enhance application of theory to practice. The module will be delivered in two blocks. The first block of five days will cover principles of SI Intervention, discussion of master clinician’s video footage with clinical reasoning; participants’ videos with questions, methods of evaluating treatment and introduction to basic research to improve evidence base; current evidence for SI; SI versus other treatment approaches; and mentoring. Between blocks the students will be expected to assess a client from their caseload, plan and deliver an intervention that is evidence based and has a measurable outcome. Some of the sessions will need to be videoed. This will be practice and work-based learning, which will be facilitated through a personal mentor, for at least four sessions for an hour. The student will be expected to keep a reflective log on their learning through the mentoring process. The second block will be based on participants’ presentations of their case studies. The whole student cohort will be present; building further on previous learning. The presentation will be part of the summative assessment. Following the second block the students will complete the assignment through self-directed learning. Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the module the student will be able to 1. Critically utilise the sensory integration evidence base to support treatment planning
2. Critically evaluate the outcome of sensory integration intervention using a single subject experimental design, or an appropriate qualitative research method
3. Demonstrate advanced therapeutic skill in the area of sensory integration intervention, including reflection and clinical reasoning. As we are an educational body, all those attending our courses must be active members of the Network. Please ensure that you are registered with us and that your membership fees of £25 [or €35] are paid before you apply to attend a course.
If you are applying to Cardiff University for accreditation, you must complete the form and return it with your SI Network application form and course fees, to the SI Network postal address. Watch this space for the next available course as the July 2010 course is already fully bookedand we may add further places!
