Is It Sensory or Is It Behavior? Behavior Problem Identification, Assessment, and Intervention

Is it Sensory? Is it Behaviour?

In looking at the issues surrounding children and their behavior, authors Carolyn Murray-Slutsky, MS OTR and Betty Paris, PT, M.Ed. emphasize that behaviors result from multiple causes and cannot be addressed in a linear fashion with any one single strategy.

Behavioral concerns arise when children’s behaviors are bothersome, interfere with their ability to learn or function, or are harmful. Some children act as they do because of their bodies’ reactions to sensory input. Inattention, distractibility, fidgeting, acting without thinking, and aggressive or defiant behaviors such as pushing or striking out all may have a sensory cause.

Clinicians, teachers, and parents will find this a useful resource for unraveling the mysteries of why children adopt certain behaviors and learning how to deal with them. In addition to the in-depth descriptions of behavioral analysis and sensory dysfunction, the authors include chapters on temper tantrums, environmental modifications, and sensory diets. Extensive charts, tables, and photos help illustrate the concepts discussed, and a number of reproducible forms and checklists are included.

The Sensory Team Handbook

 The Sensory Team Handbook

By Nancy Mucklow

The Sensory Team Handbook is the first book on sensory processing written for pre-teens and young teens. Upbeat, humorous, and hands-on, each chapter is stuffed with comics, cartoons, diagrams, quizzes, trivia, and question-answer sections. The Handbook compares the senses to a sports team that needs a coach and then shows the reader how to coach that team. This sensory team approach turns therapy into something kids can do by and for themselves. Entirely jargon-free, and written in simple, everyday language, The Sensory Team Handbook inspires kids and teens to take charge of their own sensory issues.

Developing Visual Motor Integration

Developing Visual Motor IntegrationCarolyn Murray-Slutsky, MS, OTR and Betty Paris, PT, M.Ed.

Developing Visual Motor Integration is a series of laminated workbooks that are designed to systematically help a child develop perceptual and motor skills needed for writing, copying and graphomotor proficiency needed for academic success. Each workbook is designed to gradually increase the child’s success and confidence while teaching valuable perceptual and problem solving skills. Specific areas targeted in these workbooks include building:
  • Visual spatial perception
  • Directional concepts
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Problem solving
  • Praxis (motor planning)
  • Perceptual organization
  • Fine motor control
  • Motivation

These workbooks can easily be combined with fine motor strategies and adaptations to simultaneously improve the child’s fine motor control and functional prehension. It is through combining these fine motor strategies and assuring the child uses functional prehension that we can facilitate carry over into other academic areas. Suggestions for assessing fine motor control as well as modifications to improve the child’s functional prehension and pencil control are described.

As children get familiar with the Alert Program® CD, they will get to know their favorite songs and might request a song that will help them with their engine level.

Love, Jean

 Love Jean

Captured in correspondence written by sensory integration pioneer A Jean Ayres to her nephew Philip Erwin, this book provides hope, insight, and inspiration to parents of children who have been diagnosed with dysfunction of sensory integration. Interspersed with her letters, written in the 1970s, are Erwin's poignant and sometimes gut-wrenching stories about what it felt like before, during, and after his aunt diagnosed his condition and renowned sensory integration therapist and researcher Zoe Mailloux's insights for parents from a therapist's perspective.

The result is a book that gently unfolds for parents what sensory integration is and how parents of children with sensory processing differences should be filled with hope that help is on the way. It is also a heartfelt insight into the life of A Jean Ayres and her deep love for her nephew.
