Is It Sensory or Is It Behavior? Behavior Problem Identification, Assessment, and Intervention

In looking at the issues surrounding children and their behavior, authors Carolyn Murray-Slutsky, MS OTR and Betty Paris, PT, M.Ed. emphasize that behaviors result from multiple causes and cannot be addressed in a linear fashion with any one single strategy.

Behavioral concerns arise when children’s behaviors are bothersome, interfere with their ability to learn or function, or are harmful. Some children act as they do because of their bodies’ reactions to sensory input. Inattention, distractibility, fidgeting, acting without thinking, and aggressive or defiant behaviors such as pushing or striking out all may have a sensory cause.

Clinicians, teachers, and parents will find this a useful resource for unraveling the mysteries of why children adopt certain behaviors and learning how to deal with them. In addition to the in-depth descriptions of behavioral analysis and sensory dysfunction, the authors include chapters on temper tantrums, environmental modifications, and sensory diets. Extensive charts, tables, and photos help illustrate the concepts discussed, and a number of reproducible forms and checklists are included.

Developing Visual Motor Integration

Carolyn Murray-Slutsky, MS, OTR and Betty Paris, PT, M.Ed.

Developing Visual Motor Integration is a series of laminated workbooks that are designed to systematically help a child develop perceptual and motor skills needed for writing, copying and graphomotor proficiency needed for academic success. Each workbook is designed to gradually increase the child’s success and confidence while teaching valuable perceptual and problem solving skills. Specific areas targeted in these workbooks include building:
  • Visual spatial perception
  • Directional concepts
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Problem solving
  • Praxis (motor planning)
  • Perceptual organization
  • Fine motor control
  • Motivation
These workbooks can easily be combined with fine motor strategies and adaptations to simultaneously improve the child’s fine motor control and functional prehension. It is through combining these fine motor strategies and assuring the child uses functional prehension that we can facilitate carry over into other academic areas. Suggestions for assessing fine motor control as well as modifications to improve the child’s functional prehension and pencil control are described.

The Alert Program CD

Alert Program CD is a double CD set. One of the CD's is an introduction to the program with excerpts from the Leader's Guide that are read by the authors. Many enjoy listening to it in the car, rather than reading the booklet. The second CD has fun, playful songs that help children change their engine speeds. As children get familiar with the Alert Program® CD, they will get to know their favorite songs and might request a song that will help them with their engine level.

Keep on Track

If you are geared up to use what you've learned through the Alert Program, this enticing board game is for you! After children have been introduced to the Alert Program concepts through the Leader's Guide's activities, Test Drive's songs, they are ready for this great game. The 18" x 18" board captures children's imaginations with colorful illustrations and landmarks along their road trip. Four cars, one dice, and three sets of cards are included in the game box. The game cards reinforce the Alert Program's three stages as taught in the Leader's Guide. When answering Engine Speed card questions, children learn more about how to identify engine levels (Stage One). Using the Tools cards, children learn more about the five ways to change engine levels (Stage Two). The Tune-Up cards ask questions that encourage problem-solving and independent self-regulation (Stage Three). Blank cards allow you to stack the deck with individualized questions.
