Elzette, an occupational therapist from South Africa, has just begun her SI practitioner journey with the SI Network by enrolling on the new SI Module 1 online course (September Intake). She recently shared a little bit about herself with the EmphaSIze team. This is what she had to say:
"What an immense privilege to be part of the SI Module 1 Online training program through the UK SI Network. It’s like a dream come true really!
My name is Elzette Badenhorst and I am an Occupational Therapist from South Africa, currently working in private practice, as well as in a pre-school setting in Johannesburg. My love and passion for children, in particular children on the Spectrum, are what drives me to become a better therapist day by day. I have been working in the field of Pediatrics for the last 10 years, but it was only about 3 years ago that an unquenchable interest was sparked by children with Sensory Processing Disorder, and of course I fell in love, I think mostly because of the fact that Sensory Processing Disorder often presents as Autism and is so often misunderstood and misdiagnosed.
Many families are referred to our practice from other practices in an around our area on a weekly basis. They often arrive despondent and with very little faith in our ability to make a significant impact on their lives as a unit, as well as being able to positively influence and relieve the daily challenges their child might face. This is largely due to negative previous experiences.
I feel an enormous compelling responsibility to educate and empower my clients, as well as their families, to the best of my ability, to understand, manage and cope with a child with a Sensory Processing Difficulty, by providing them with functional tools and strategies. I believe that embarking on this training will bring me one step closer to that goal."
